Secondary device
Purchase a gadget holder
Sometimes it is important for me to watch you in action. Please consider investing in a device clip with a flexible neck (pictured below), and downloading the Teams App on a small secondary device like a phone or tablet (you can be in the meeting on more than one device, but any device you use must be able to get the internet). you can position it in a way that the webcam can capture what you are doing over your non dominant hand. This one came from Walmart in their media area and cost about $12. There are dozens of choices on the internet, just google “Device clip with gooseneck”. They are great for allowing me to watch what you are doing, and less intrusive than trying to position a laptop between yourself and your artwork.
Outside of class, they are also great to use if you are drawing from a reference on one of your devices! I use it all the time in the studio.
If you opt out of getting one, in a pinch you can just hold your artwork up to your computer camera, but I won’t be able to watch you work.

To sign in on your secondary device, you will follow the same instruction, by first going to your email and clicking on the same link etc.
Position your secondary device (phone) so that the screen faces your art. You will be able to adjust the position at any time.

What to expect in the online art class
If applicable, we will spend the first few minutes getting you oriented with the team’s platform.
I have designed the structure to work as closely to our usual weekly classes as possible. To expedite the lesson, please send me a picture of the latest version of your art (details below), and a picture of your image reference. You will need to take pictures of your work and email updated versions to me several times during class. Just like the regular class, we will rotate between students.
So, get ready to do some art!
To help me prepare, please let me know what medium you will be using.
I recommend having a glass of water and a notebook near at hand.
DO NOT select a pretty background scene for yourself, it makes it impossible to see your art work.

Taking pictures of your art
Before we begin, I will need for you to email me pictures of both your reference and if started, latest version of your art work. Try to take a capture that has as little glare as possible. Also, position your camera as square and centered as possible, basically, look at the edges around your art and try to make them parallel to the sides. If your picture is skewed, it will create distortion and I won’t be able to give you accurate feedback on the drawing. See below.
If you are not using a secondary device for me to watch you work, you will need to take pictures of your ongoing work several times during the class and send me updated versions.

This is a bad capture, notice the sides are not parallel to the edges.
Aside from a bit of glare, this is a much better capture, notice all 4 sides are mostly parallel. Don't worry about extra stuff in the background, I can crop that out.
Learning format
Depending on what is going on with your piece, if I am giving you feedback, or demonstrating you will either see your (or your classmate’s) artwork in a program I am using on the computer, as pictured below.
Or, you will watch a live demonstration for your piece in the medium you are using, see below.
Congratulations, you are ready for an online art class!
Thank you for joining me and being a very valued student! See you soon, Christine
